Central Lake Township and Village
Wed., Nov. 11, 7 p.m. · Village Council regular meeting, Village Office, 2530 N. Main St.
That meeting has passed. We’ll post what happened when minutes are out.
Before the board, and recent decisions
- Pending
Central Lake’s sewage plant on M-88 is running on an expired state groundwater permit (GW1010136). The permit expired June 1, 2020, and the state lists it as “Extended.” The renewal application, received Jan. 21, 2020, is still “In Process.” The state’s file also counts 18 violation records, which the public can’t open without a login.
- Discussed
An update on the Bellaire Dam from the county drain commissioner was on the agenda. The minutes aren’t posted yet.
- Info
The township has applied to join the National Flood Insurance Program, the supervisor reported.
- Approved
The board agreed to let an ambulance be kept at the fire hall for a trial of up to 90 days. All three members present voted yes.
- Info
The village scheduled a public hearing and a special council meeting on a zoning change to allow a medical marijuana facility in the village. The village hasn’t posted the result.
- Discussed
The county drain commissioner, who operates the county’s dams, came to the township building to take questions about the Bellaire Dam. On March 18, the county commissioner had briefed the board on a special assessment being discussed for the dam, and residents asked about the dam again in April and May.
- Info
The supervisor asked the board to bring back a master plan. Members said one isn’t needed because the township has no zoning. The minutes say the motion not to pursue a plan carried, but the roll call printed with it reads four no votes and one yes, the opposite of that result.
- Info
A special council meeting was called to approve a contractor for the village’s kayak launch, to be finished this summer. The village hasn’t posted the result.
- Approved
The board approved bills including a new fire truck ($493,274) and moved $125,000 from fire savings to cover it. All members voted yes.

Take part
Township meetings are open to the public and start with public comment. Written comments go to the township clerk or, for zoning matters, the zoning administrator. Official notices of hearings are published in a print newspaper, which must also post them free on mipublicnotices.com. For a zoning request, neighbors within 300 feet are also sent notice by mail. Townships often post the notice on their own website too. We aren’t a paper of record (why). Know something we should look at here? tips@torchlakeobserver.com. A correction: corrections@torchlakeobserver.com.
